ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Comes to Houston’s Bay Area
By Domino Taylor
The highly popular TV series, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has come to Houston’s Bay Area and one well deserving family will get the ultimate surprise of their life by Ty Pennington and his team on January 7, 2010. The worthy recipient of this dream home has local builder, Blu Shields Construction, a Division of Energy Solutions Homes, Coastal Building Specialists, at the helm of this mighty project.
Blu Shields Construction is reaching out to the community, businesses, organizations and corporate offices for monetary donations for this worthy cause. Patrick Henderson, CEO of Blu Shields Construction stated, “When ABC came to us to build a home for this family, we were honored. We are not into the glamour or fame, we just want to pull the community together to make what would normally take 8 to 15months to build, complete in 7 days. In one week we will go from demolition, ground breaking and concrete slab to the family sleeping in their beds.”
Being a fan of the show, Henderson, his grandfather Blu Shields and grandmother Pat Shields have family pride on always giving back to the community and helping those in need. Henderson stated, “Our company shares the same philosophy as Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EM:HE) good people helping good people.” Blu Shields Construction and Energy Solutions Homes have worked diligently putting people back in their homes after the devastating hurricane Ike. Besides the Good Samaritan deeds that this construction company delivers, EM: HE knew that they shared another vision with Blu Shields Construction, to change custom homebuilding.
“Our homes are built within 30 to 45 days,” says Blu Shields President of Blu Shields Construction, “and they are built below the average construction costs all while building energy efficient homes.”
Henderson added, “We will have approximately 300 construction workers working 24/7, including concrete workers, framers, siding, woodworkers, lumber, roofing, plumbing, electrical, flooring and A/C professionals. Our website has a list of items needed, but at this time our most urgent need is monetary donations, and for that we have set up a Pay Pal account so anyone can contribute, $5 goes along way and $5,000 goes even further.”
The build schedule starts on January 4 with the Pep Rally for the volunteers and sponsors; January 7 is the ‘Door Knock’ when Ty Pennington and his team notify the family with the ‘Braveheart Walk’. The famous walk is the masses of ‘blue shirt & white hard hat’ clad volunteers that walk in a ceremonial rank and file procession to the site that officially kickoffs the building. The reveal will be January 14, when the famous slogan “Move That Bus!” is shouted to the heavens and the completed home is viewed for the first time and the family enters their new home. Now this might be the day to have extra tissues on hand after the tears of joy shed for a job well done by talented and generous people.
